Rahul was very excited to go to school since it was his birthday that day. He suddenly felt grown up and very important. So he dressed up for school, looked at his smart reflection in the mirror, and admired his well combed hair. His teacher rightly called him “Mr. Smarty”. He was undoubtedly a well-dressed and smart child who took pride in wearing a well ironed uniform and shiningly polished shoes.
As he entered his class room he was thrilled to hear the birthday song melodiously sung by his friends. His teacher wished him with a warm smile and handed him his favourite chocolate. As the day passed, Rahul’s friends waited impatiently for the recess hour. It was a routine to distribute birthday sweets at this time. He began the process by handing two toffees per child. His mother had asked him to be fair and distribute equally…even to the girls.
He continued to do so till he reached Mayank. Rahul slipped his hand into the packet of sweets, picked up two and looked at Mayank. Of course he had till now done whatever mother had told him to, but she did not say anything about an enemy. So he looked at Mayank and dropped one sweet back in the packet and handed Mayank only one sweet. Mayank noticed this and Rahul felt satisfied. He remembered that Mayank had refused to lend him a pencil in the Art class the previous day. Now he had taken revenge. Just as Rahul was about to move on, Mayank got up from his seat. Rahul was terrified. Would Mayank tell the teacher that Rahul had given him only one sweet? Yes, he would surely do it and spoil his special day.
Mayank smiled at Rahul, slowly took his hand out from his pocket, extended it towards Rahul, and said, “Wishing you a very happy birthday, my friend!” Rahul simply stared back, and for some unknown reason hugged Mayank and said, “My friend, this has been my best birthday so far. I have made a friend who is large hearted and loving.” Saying this, he took out another sweet from the packet and slipped it into Mayank’s hand.
